INSPIRING SUSTAINABILITY AT ASTRO
As ASTRO continues to strive to make a difference we constantly keep in mind that the success of each initiative that we choose to undertake can only be achieved with the support of our diverse and numerous stakeholders.
As a company that continues to grow and evolve, we are constantly seeking to engage our many subscribers, listeners, readers, on-line visitors and customers. Despite the numerous changes and challenges that the Company continues to face, ASTRO’s commitment towards long-term sustainability has never wavered. ASTRO has five core responsibilities to ensure the long term sustainability of the
Company:-
1. Creating Responsible Content
2. Engaging Stakeholders Positively
3. Ensuring Ethical Conduct
4. Cultivating Uninhibited Creativity
5. Investing in the Community
Creating Responsible Content
As a service provider in television, radio, Internet, film and publications, we take every effort to ensure that the content we produce is wholesomely educational, entertaining and compliant with the rules set by our regulators, as well as with the needs and sensitivities of the community in mind.
Engaging Stakeholders Positively
Whilst we have been growing from strength to strength, we must acknowledge that ASTRO would not be the leading media group that it is today without the support of our business partners, suppliers, regulators, neighbours, special interest groups and, of course, our employees and customers. Thus ASTRO will continue its efforts to understand, engage and support the numerous and diverse organisations, groups and individuals that have a stake in our business
Ensuring Ethical Conduct
As a responsible business entity, we take seriously the need to uphold good ethics and sound corporate governance to ensure compliance with the laws and regulations within which we operate as well as to conduct our business with integrity, transparency and accountability.
Cultivating Uninhibited Creativity
As a leading content creator, ASTRO relies on its employees to do their best, to make the right decisions, to maintain high standards, to be conscientious, as well as be unreservedly creative and innovative in their everyday tasks. It is thus our responsibility to initiate and support efforts to encourage and nurture creativity within the Company as well as in the community that we so depend on.
Investing In The Community
As an organisation whose activities have a significant influence on society through our various media platforms, ASTRO is in a position to make a difference in the community via the following pillars:
- Learning - As education means self-improvement as well as economic mobility within communities, we shall strive to provide as many opportunities as possible to deliver world class educational content to schools across the country. Raising the standard of education also ensures that the nation will be able to draw upon a ready pool of competent workers, thinkers, teachers, leaders and visionaries to draw upon.
- Environment - An important facet of our efforts to be a responsible corporate citizen is our commitment to mitigate and be accountable for the direct and indirect impact our businesses have on our physical surroundings.
- Sports - As neighbourhood playing fields rapidly disappear and video games reign supreme, it is imperative that every effort be made to encourage and support participation in sports. This is to create a healthy society and, if possible, discover potential world-class sportsmen and women as well as encourage positive values such as sportsmanship, fair play, respect for rules and authority as well as encourage healthy and friendly competition.
We have already made much effort to take on these responsibilities. In terms of protecting the environment, I am pleased to announce that our facility and headquarters at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur obtained the international ISO 14001: 2004 Environmental Management Systems certification in November 2009. The award of this certification is acknowledgment that our efforts to control and improve our environmental performance are of a globally accepted standard. Complementing this is our three-year Environmental Strategic Plan to reduce the consumption of power, water and the generation of waste which is on track and will help ensure that out operations are increasingly environmentally friendly.
In this report we have provided information on how we have performed in our other responsibilities, many of which, such as our flagship education programme – Kampus Astro – are still very much a work-in-progress. Others such as responsible content and ensuring ethical conduct are duties that we have been steadfast about from the very commencement of our operations. We have also further enhanced our stakeholder engagement efforts by including our employees in our Astro Kasih volunteer programme which has mobilised the entire staff strength to make a contribution to the community.
As ASTRO continues to strive to make a difference we constantly keep in mind that the success of each initiative that we choose to undertake can only be achieved with the support of our diverse and numerous stakeholders.
